Route 49 Bridge Widening

Located on State Route (SR) 49 where it crosses the North Fork Mokelumne River. The Route 49 project is limited to widening and replacing rails to include four-foot shoulders. The existing roadway approaches, on each side of the bridge, will be widened from two feet to four feet for approximately 60 to 85 linear feet along SR 49 to match the widening bridge. The SR 49 embankments slopes behind the bridge abutments will be widening by using imported fill material that would be laid on the existing embankments, compacted, and stabilized. The bridge widening will be approximately 32 feet wide after construction. The project is also limited to the partial removal and reconstruction of a water monitoring station that is owned and operated by East Bay Municipal Utility District. The gauging and stilling device is attached to the west side of Pier 3 on the south side of the bridge and will be removed to accommodate the construction of the new bridge rails and shoulder widenings. The overall project improvements will enhance the lifespan of the existing bridge structure and surrounding components as well as welcoming bicyclist to utilize the Mokelumne River Bridge as a passageway to enter both Calaveras and Amador County.
