International Parkway Bridge Replacement

Project Overview:
The International Parkway Bridge Replacement Project is located on International Parkway, between Interstate 205 (I-205) and Interstate 580 (I-580), spanning the Delta-Mendota Canal in Tracy, California. The project replaces the existing 34-foot-wide, two-lane bridge with a modern structure designed to improve traffic operations, multimodal access, and long-term transportation capacity within one of the City’s fastest-growing industrial and commercial corridors.

The new crossing consists of two independent precast prestressed concrete girder bridges, each with a 151-foot span separated by a 2-foot median. The northbound bridge, approximately 44 feet wide, accommodates two through lanes and a 12-foot-wide Class I shared-use bicycle and pedestrian path. The southbound bridge, approximately 48 feet wide, carries two through lanes, an exclusive left-turn lane, and a 6-foot-wide raised sidewalk. The completed project will significantly improve vehicle capacity while enhancing pedestrian and bicycle connectivity across the Delta-Mendota Canal.

In addition to the bridge replacement, the project includes demolition of the existing bridge, construction of retaining walls, roadway approach improvements, traffic signal modifications, utility relocations, and associated civil improvements.

Construction Highlights:

Construction began with installation of the bridge foundations, abutments, wingwalls, and retaining wall systems necessary to support the widened bridge approaches while minimizing impacts to the Delta-Mendota Canal. The retaining walls were constructed adjacent to the canal to accommodate the expanded roadway section and provide a smooth transition between the new bridge and approach embankments.

Following completion of the substructure, Bridgeway Civil Constructors, Inc. erected the precast prestressed concrete girders using large-capacity hydraulic cranes. The girder erection operation required detailed lift planning, precise crane positioning, and careful coordination to safely place each girder across the active canal while maintaining safe operations within the constrained project limits.

After girder erection, crews installed galvanized stay-in-place metal deck forms between the girders to support construction of the bridge deck. The stay-in-place deck system eliminated the need for conventional removable soffit forms over the canal, improving worker safety, reducing construction time, and providing an efficient platform for reinforcing steel installation. Bridge deck reinforcing steel, diaphragms, and deck overhang formwork were then installed in preparation for deck placement. The bridge deck was subsequently constructed using cast-in-place reinforced concrete, placed by concrete pump to achieve a continuous structural deck across the precast girder system.

Construction remains on schedule, with project completion anticipated in Spring/Summer 2027.
