Route 580 Patterson Pass
Project Overview:
The Patterson Pass Road Interchange Improvement Project, for the City of Tracy, is located at the intersection of Interstate 580 (I-580) and Patterson Pass Road in San Joaquin County, California.
The project consists of constructing a new Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) while improving the existing compact diamond (Type TL-1) interchange to accommodate increasing traffic demands generated by commercial growth and planned future development within the region. Once complete, the DDI will improve traffic operations by shifting vehicles to the opposite side of the roadway while crossing I-580, allowing direct left-turn movements onto the freeway ramps and reducing conflict points. Signalized crossover intersections will safely guide traffic through the interchange while increasing capacity and improving safety.
The existing Patterson Pass Road overcrossing is being widened to the east to accommodate:
- Three 14-foot northbound travel lanes;
- Two 14-foot southbound travel lanes;
- Six-foot inside and outside shoulders;
- A 15-foot-wide shared-use bicycle and pedestrian path within the center of the overcrossing; and
- A 6-foot-wide Class II bicycle lane through the interchange.
Bridge Construction Progress:
Bridgeway Civil Constructors, Inc. has successfully completed the installation of the precast prestressed concrete girders for the Stage 1 bridge widening. Following girder erection, timber deck forms were installed between girders to support placement of the stay-in-place metal deck system and reinforced concrete bridge deck.
The bridge deck construction incorporates galvanized stay-in-place metal deck forms, which eliminate the need for conventional removable soffit forming while providing a safe and efficient work platform for reinforcing steel placement. As shown below, crews completed installation of the metal decking and progressed with placement of the deck reinforcement, demonstrating the coordinated sequencing required between structural steel, reinforcing steel, and deck forming operations.
Following completion of reinforcing steel installation, the bridge deck concrete was successfully placed using a concrete pump under carefully coordinated traffic control operations. The placement required close coordination among the concrete supplier, pump operator, inspection staff, and field crews to ensure continuous concrete placement while maintaining quality, safety, and compliance with the project specifications.
The attached photographs illustrate the progression of bridge construction from girder erection and timber deck forming, through installation of the stay-in-place metal deck and reinforcing steel, culminating in placement of the structural bridge deck concrete. These milestones represent significant progress toward completing the new Patterson Pass Road overcrossing and advancing construction of the Diverging Diamond Interchange.
Construction remains on schedule, with project completion anticipated in Summer/Fall 2027.
